Things To Do In Maui
By admin | September 6, 2008
Whether you’re just looking for a relaxing time or looking for something more adventurous, Maui has something for everyone both young and old alike.
For quiet relaxation you can just take a book and spend time on one of many unspoiled beaches. Or you could take in the excitement of a whale-watching tour, watch the sun come up from the top of the 10,000 foot Haleakala Crater, spend a day at the Iao Valley State Park, or just simply send the day browsing around the many museums and shops.
The island of Maui is a place steeped in history and legend. It was named after the mythical demigod, Maui, because it is believed the island’s shape resembles his head and body. The Iao Valley State Park was once a sacred burial ground for the Hawaiian Royalty. Here you will find the 1200 foot Iao needle, a rock peak overlooking Iao stream. The site is great for hiking and sightseeing.
The beaches on Maui seem to be never ending. The beautiful backdrop of the island’s lush greenery rolls down to the crystal clear blue waters of the Pacific ocean. The contrasting stretches of wide sandy beaches are perfect for sun bathing, and the warm waters are perfect for snorkeling and surfing. Of course, you can just sit and marvel at the wonderful views!
For nature lovers, the months of December through to April provide the perfect opportunity to see Humpback whales. These majestic creatures migrate to the warmer waters surrounding Maui during this time. A visit to the historic whaling town of Lahaina will give you chance to learn more about whales.
If you have kids (or even if you don’t), a visit to the Maui Ocean Center should be on your list of things to do in Maui. Here you can walk through an acrylic tunnel and watch Manta Rays and Sharks swimming right overhead. You can also check out the Nature Centre and the 1890’s Lahaina-Kaanapali sugar cane train ride.
You will find that most resorts and hotels offer daily programs for kids to keep them involved and occupied.
